March is one of the busiest months in Volusia County. Between Bike Week and Spring Break, our town is buzzing with energy, visitors, and a much-welcomed boost to the local economy. We love it. As long as everyone respects each other and has a good time, it’s always a great way to kick off spring. But once the bikes roll out and the spring breakers head home, we’ve got another event to gear up for – The Event.
If you’ve never been, let me break it down for you. It’s basically a town-wide showdown where we all get to relive our glory days of recess and prove we’ve still got it. Or, if you’re like me, it’s a chance to beat your spouse in a friendly(ish) competition and hold it over their head until next year. Either way, it’s a blast.
This year, The Event takes place on Saturday, April 12, from 9 AM to 12 PM at the NSB Sports Complex Flex Field, and it’s open to anyone who wants to play. You don’t have to be an athlete – just someone who enjoys good old-fashioned competition.
HOW IT WORKS
It’s simple: you rotate through different sports stations, you get three chances at each game, and you rack up as many points as possible. If you dominate, you get bragging rights (trust me, they’re worth it). Here’s a breakdown of the stations:
- Basketball – Three free throws, then three threepointers. Sink ‘em, or shame yourself in front of your friends, like I did last year.
- Soccer – Take three penalty kicks and three corner shots – oh, and dodge the strategically placed trash cans acting as “goalies.”
- Football – Try to throw a football 20 yards into a trash can (easier said than done) and kick a field goal from 16 yards out.
- Baseball – Hit a ball off a tee and try to land it in a set zone, then throw a baseball from a pro-league mound to hit – what else? – a trash can.
Each station takes about 5-10 minutes, and once you’ve completed them all, you turn in your scorecard to see how you stack up. And if you think it’s all just for fun – think again. This competition is taken VERY seriously in my house.
Scotty and I have been at it for years, and we look forward to seeing who walks away with the better score (and, more importantly, the year-long bragging rights). Let’s just say I really need to pull it together this year – I did way too much smack talk last year for the performance I gave.
THE AFTER PARTY & PRIZES
When the dust settles (or when we’ve all sufficiently embarrassed ourselves), we celebrate! At 1 PM, we head over to Lost Lagoon Wings & Grill (2004 North Dixie Freeway, NSB), where winners will be announced, prizes will be given, and competitors can swap stories over some well-earned food and drinks.
- Adult tickets (16+): $30 – Includes game entry, an event t-shirt, a raffle ticket, and a shot at a first or second-place trophy.
- Kids tickets (15 and under): $10 – Includes a goodie bag, full access to the Kid Zone, and their own competition with prizes.
A GOOD TIME FOR A GOOD CAUSE
The Event is hosted by Table 2 Committee, a nonprofit that raises money for local youth sports programs. Since 2018, they’ve donated over $40,000 to help kids in Volusia County get the gear, resources, and opportunities they need to play. So, while we’re all out here talking smack and reliving our playground glory days, we’re also giving back.
If you want to compete, sponsor, donate, or volunteer, now’s the time. Scan the QR code to get tickets, become a sponsor, or contribute to the cause. If you have a prize, donation, or just want to help out, reach out – I’d love to connect with you.
So, who’s in? The countdown to April 12 is on. Let’s see who’s got the skills, who’s all talk, and who’s walking away with the ultimate bragging rights. See you on the field!
