Giddy Up and Go: Horseback Riding with The Rusty Spur

Meet Brittny Olsen: The Heart Behind The Rusty Spur’s Trail Adventures

If you’re looking for a Florida adventure that feels like a true escape without straying too far from home, a trail ride with The Rusty Spur is just the ticket. Locally owned and based in New Smyrna Beach, this family-owned business, led by Brittny Olsen, offers far more than your average horseback ride. From river rides and photography sessions to special events and sunrise/sunset trail rides, Brittny and her small herd of gentle, well-trained horses deliver experiences that feel both peaceful and unforgettable.

For our ride, we met Brittny at Palm Bluff Conservation Area in Osteen, only about a half-hour away — close enough for an easy afternoon but just far enough to feel worlds away. We started about an hour before sunset, with the soft light filtering through the trees and a cool breeze rolling in after an afternoon rain. Parts of the trail still held shallow pools of water, and our horses splashed through them like kids in puddles. It was serene and a little bit magical — the kind of quiet you only find out in the middle of nowhere (or what feels like it at least).

Horseback Riding for Kids and Beginners

Avery, our nature-loving kiddo and horse girl in the making, was absolutely thrilled to ride on her own for the very first time. That’s one of the biggest things that sets The Rusty Spur apart — Brittny believes everyone, no matter how small, should have the chance to experience the joy of connecting with a horse. Most riding companies require riders to be 10 or older, but Brittny’s patient guidance and expertly matched horses make it possible for even young riders to have an independent, confidence-building experience.

Before we set off, Avery got to meet all the horses in the lineup and snuggle for a bit, before being paired with Wrangler, a gentleman in every sense of the word who waited calmly while she got used to the reins and stirrups. I was matched with Willow, a steady and sure-footed mare with a mind of her own, while Scott was paired with Alcoa, the class clown who liked to nudge everyone for scratches and turn circles while he waited impatiently for us to catch up.

As we made our way deeper into the preserve, the clusters of trees gave way to open fields bathed in golden sunlight. This wasn’t your typical “nose-to-tail” ride, either. Brittny encourages riders to move at their own pace — sometimes riding side by side, sometimes spreading out a bit to let each horse find its rhythm. Avery giggled every time Wrangler picked up into a trot, squealing with glee as they splashed through puddles.

By the time the sun began to set, we came upon a herd of cattle moving lazily across the field ahead. Avery and I rode alongside them for a bit and chatted, both of us feeling like real cowgirls for a moment — even if our version came with bug spray and bottled water.

The Story Behind The Rusty Spur

Beyond the ride itself, Brittny’s story is one of passion and purpose. After 14 years of service between the military and her work as a New Smyrna Beach police officer, she made The Rusty Spur her full-time career about three years ago. What began as a small lesson business has grown into a full-fledged operation offering everything from paint-and-sip nights and barn yoga, river and trail rides, and beach photography sessions, to even massages in the barn surrounded by horses and country air — experiences you won’t find anywhere else.

The Rusty Spur is proudly veteran and first responder–owned and operated, offering discounts to those communities. Brittny, her husband Jason, and their daughter Lila run the business together, and they’re deeply involved in giving back — bringing their beloved miniature pony, Jolene, to schools, nursing homes, and charity events just to spread smiles.

By the time our ride ended, the sky had turned cotton candy pink, the fields glowed in the fading light, and Avery was being mobbed by the horses for treats. Between the gentle horses, Brittny’s down-to-earth charm, and the peace of the open trail, it was the perfect way to end our day — a little adventure, a little mud, and a whole lot of heart.

So if you’re craving something that’s equal parts relaxing, inspiring, and joyfully Floridian, saddle up with The Rusty Spur.

Know Before You Saddle Up:

Closed-toe shoes are required, and you may want long pants since you’ll be riding through brush and branches. Each horse has saddlebags for your drinks (yes, even an adult beverage) and snacks. Helmets are available upon request (same for bug spray!) but are required by law for riders under 16 — bring your own or Brittny will fit you with one. Saddle up and enjoy the ride!
