INSIDE LOOK: 5 Time Shag

Q: What brought you guys together?

A: In 2011, I [Scotty, pictured below] was leaving one band and met Eric, our guitarist, and Giulio, the bass player; we all jammed together to see what would happen and it was a perfect fit. Patsy joined the group in 2016 – he already knew our music, so it was an easy decision to have him join the band.

Q: How did you come up with your band name?

A: Originally we were Blue Beat, and last minute we had to change the name because it was already copyrighted. We were in the middle of recording an album and performing and we had a few days to come up with a new name. Giulio had an idea for a side project he was working on with a band name, 5 Time Shag. It took a little bit for all of us toagree, but eventually we knew it fit us perfectly.

Q: Describe your sound.

A: Our sound is progressive, edgy and influenced by different genres. Each person in the band has a different taste in music, but we all have a similar taste in what we produce together. Punk driven with influences from reggae, funk and grunge; we take a piece from each and tell the story of who we are.

Q: Have you recorded an album yet?

A: Yes. We just finished our EP. We recorded with Static Live Music with Billy Chapin and Sean Impara and we had a lot of great musicians help us out, including Eric Christian from Beebs and Her Money Makers. We recorded six songs and our album is available online, January 23rd. You can download it on Spotify and iTunes and you can even play it at any TouchTunes Jukebox you find.

Q: Where can people follow you?

A: Facebook is probably the best outlet right now.We are in the process of creating our Snapchat, Instagram and website. Follow us on Facebook for now! Search: fivetimeshag

Q: What is your favorite song to perform?

A: Hungry Giant. It is a song we wrote about people who hate and are judgmental about differences in other people and their choices. It doesn’t matter where we come from, we are the same in the end.

Q: Scotty, do you sing in the shower? What songs?

A: Yes, I always like the acoustics in the shower. I really like the song, “Careless Whisper” by George Michael. I usually can’t hit those notes, but my range seems to be better in the shower.

Q: What are your major musical influences?

A: As a band, Queens of the Stone Age is probably our most favorite collectively to listen to. I’ve learned and listened to all the music my band members are inspired by and that has made a huge impact on who we are as a band. It is exciting when you share something with three other people and have the opportunity to create a sound together.

Q: Who do you sound like?

A: We try not to sound like anybody. I mean obviously we have our influences, but we want to have our own identity and stand out. This is the one question I can’t stand, but if I have to answer it… I’ve heard we sound a lot like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, with a Sublime feel and a hint of shag.

Q: Tell me about Rocktails. (Pictured below)

A: Rocktails is about the musicians and the cocktails they drink. Each month I write a story about a musician and their drink of choice. At the end of the story I create a cocktail based on that musicians favorite alcohol. You can find these stories and recipes in Static Live each month under the pen name: Chez Rocker.
