Rising Together: A Local Family’s Sourdough Success

What started as a humble kitchen experiment during the early days of the pandemic has grown into one of the area’s most beloved local bakeries.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

Dutch Oven Bread Co., founded by Fabio and Candice Uyttewaal in 2020, began with their sourdough starter and a whole lot of trial and error. Baking out of their home while raising two young kids, the Uyttewaals turned uncertainty into opportunity, offering fresh, naturally leavened bread to friends and neighbors and even making door-to-door deliveries.

Word spread quickly. Within a couple of years, they moved into a commercial kitchen in Edgewater, where they’ve been serving the community ever since with curbside pickup and an ever-growing menu of sourdough breads and pastries. Customers arrive weekly for their from-scratch croissants, chewy bagels, and signature sourdough loaves, each one shaped by hand and made with intention.

Now, five years later, Dutch Oven Bread Co. is expanding once again! This time to a new retail location on Canal Street in downtown New Smyrna Beach. The space will offer locals and visitors alike a chance to experience the baked goods and staff firsthand, with fresh bread, pastries, and other delicious offerings served in the heart of the city.
