As July wrapped up and we’ve shifted into full-throttle summer mode, the bite is just as hot as the weather. The backwaters are loaded with bait and hungry fish, and the ocean is alive with bait pods and showing signs of tarpon—always a great indicator that fishing is, as usual, awesome.

TOP LURES FOR BACKWATER FISHING SUCCESS
In mid-July, I had a solid sight-casting session using my go-to Henn Lures, landing a beautiful backwater redfish. The tides have been extremely low lately, which has made sight-casting even more productive.
In my opinion, white paddle-tail lures are the top choice for artificial bait—the fish have been aggressive and hitting hard. I’ll also use live mullet or cut mullet, depending on tide and location.
My longtime friend Casey Collins headed out on his annual red snapper trip and, as always, scored a few solid fish. Casey prefers using a flare hawk jig, popping it on the retrieve for the best action.

Expect more snapper opportunities during the upcoming open harvest days.
