Well, we made it! The summer break is winding down, and the countdown to back-to-school is officially on. Our family wrapped up our summer travels, and we’re planning to stick close to home until the school bell rings.
One of our last big summer moments was celebrating my son Porter’s 10th birthday at Daytona Lagoon. He and a group of his little besties had the best time. We went all-in with the full party package—cabana, hostess, and all-day access to both the waterpark and the fun park. That includes everything from putt-putt and laser tag to bumper cars, go-karts and the arcade. We rolled in when the park opened at 11 a.m. and didn’t leave until 6 p.m.—a full day of fun for both kids and adults.
Honestly, it was one of the easiest parties I’ve ever hosted. I love when an event space handles everything—entertainment, food, a place to hang out—so I can just enjoy the day. Floating through the lazy river while the kids ran wild with joy? That’s my kind of birthday party. You can read more about it from my husband’s perspective in his column this month.
COMING UP: THE AUCTION
If you’ve read my letters before, you’ve probably heard me mention Table 2 Committee. It’s a local nonprofit I love being part of, and you may know them from The Event—their annual field day-style fundraiser that supports youth sports programs right here in Southeast Volusia.
I’m excited to announce their brand-new event: The Auction—a live auction fundraiser happening Sunday, August 31, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Traders Sports Pub on Flagler Avenue. It’s going to be a high-energy day packed with music, food, fun, and big prizes, all for a great cause.
My husband’s band, 5 Time Shag, will kick things off with a set from 2 to 3 p.m. That gives everyone time to sign up, grab a paddle, and check out the auction list. Then from 3 to 5 p.m., DJ Brian will host the live auction. The day will close out with another set from 5 Time Shag from 5 to 6 p.m.
Everyone who registers to bid will enjoy free pulled pork sandwiches courtesy of SoNapa Grille, and we’re working hard to gather some amazing auction items—from instruments and bottles of booze to vacation stays, gift cards, and themed baskets. All proceeds will go directly to support youth sports programs in Southeast Volusia. Since 2018, Table 2 Committee has donated over $40,000 back into the community, and that is something I can get behind. If you’d like to donate an item or get involved, please reach out—I’ll be happy to connect you.
FROM THE HEART
Although I’ve been editor of this magazine for 10 years, I didn’t start writing this monthly column until January—and I just want to say thank you. To everyone who emails me, calls, or stops me in public to say something kind about the magazine—you have no idea how much that means to me.
This isn’t a side hustle for me and Kelsey— this is our full-time job, our day-to-day, our livelihood. We’ve poured our hearts into creating a community-focused magazine that lifts up local businesses, artists, musicians, and causes. And because of your continued support, we’ve been able to grow, evolve, and stay incredibly hands-on with our kids and family life.
If you see us out and about, please come say hello. It’s truly the best part of what we do.
Thanks for reading, and here’s to a strong finish to summer and a great start to the school year!
