Love for City Programs and Events

With the summer months upon us, it may be time for your family, like mine, to think about sports, clubs and programs to keep the kids busy. I am certainly a cheerleader for local businesses and events, but I want to take some time to share my love for city-sponsored programs throughout Volusia County.

Daytona Beach Gymnastics at Schnebly Recreation Center

When my eldest daughter first asked about trying gymnastics, we initially chose the city program due to the lower costs and entry-level requirements. Now all three of my girls have been involved in Daytona Beach Gymnastics (DBG) for two years at the Schnebly Recreation Center (1101N. Atlantic Ave). DBG has a long history of team and individual success in competitions.

So far, my daughters have only been on the non-competitive, “rec” team, but they had a chance to demonstrate their skills at the annual spring exhibition. Every May, each age and skill level has the opportunity to wear an official DBG leotard and show off their progress to family and friends. Last year, Daytona Beach Mayor Henry helped cover the cost of the uniforms and this year, the Leisure Services Department and Mr. Willis did so. Yet another reason to appreciate the city! The spring session is going on now with summer camps planned for late June.

South Daytona’s T-Ball and Baseball League at James Street Park

Another city sponsored sports program my family has taken part in the past is South Daytona’s T-Ball and Baseball League. Back in the spring of 2020 when many programs were still shut down due to the pandemic, it was great to have the kids out on the field with Dad and his friend as the coaches! The league has been around long enough to have a steady routine of practices and games and even recently upgraded the James Street Park where both are held (1797 James St., South Daytona). My eldest played coach-pitch the one season we took part and there have been conversations of going back soon. The spring season should be wrapping up now, but keep an eye out for fall ball!

Midtown Music Concert Series at Daisy Stocking Park

Lastly, a free city-sponsored event, rather than sport, that is fun for the whole family is the Midtown Music Concert Series. Each month, a diverse line-up of music hits the stage at the newly renovated Daisy Stocking Park (555 Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Blvd.). At the park re-opening in April, my kids enjoyed the new playground equipment with Shelly and Shelldon of the Tortugas while we all enjoyed local food vendors, the shaded seating areas, and beautiful landscape. Make sure to bring your own chairs to get closer to the stage! The next shows are June 15 and July 20, with line dancing at 6:30 p.m. and the concert at 7 p.m.

Finding City Events and Programs

While each city in Volusia has their own website with a program calendar, Facebook is a pretty good place to see events from all of them in one place. The calendar here in East Coast Current features many, as well! You’ll be sure to find city-sponsored movie nights, food trucks events, summer camps, and more! Here’s to a summer of cost-effective, community-oriented fun!
