5 Things You Can Do in a Single Day on Jekyll Island

Nestled along the picturesque coast of Georgia lies the enchanting community of Jekyll Island, where time seems to slow down amidst its pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and rich history. Despite its compact size (not even seven miles long), this charming barrier island offers an abundance of experiences waiting to be savored, making it an ideal destination for a memorable day trip or short weekend getaway.

Our family was lucky enough to snag a camping spot with our little pop up camper in Jekyll Island Campground. Situated just north of Jacksonville, we were able to head north and set up camp on a Friday night after work, which gave us a full day to explore the island the next morning. The campground in itself is an absolute treat, nestled under sprawling oaks on 18 wooded acres, and is incredibly quiet and peaceful. If camping isn’t your jam, there are several lodging options right on the island, or you can make an early start and stop in for a day trip.

From exploring historic landmarks to indulging in outdoor adventures and savoring coastal cuisine, Jekyll Island promises a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. Here are five fun, family-friendly activities you can accomplish in just a single day or short weekend trip to this hidden gem of the South.

DITCH THE GAS GUZZLER – CRUISE ON TWO WHEELS

If you’re able, this little island was basically designed to be explored by bicycle. Everywhere you look, just about everyone is traveling by bike. Endless pathways and trails lend to walking or biking to explore, and all destinations are easily accessible. If you’re down to ride (and E-bikes make it even easier), you can explore this entire island from two wheels. If you didn’t bring your own, plenty of spots offer bike rentals as well. Our campsite was a quick ride from the beach and fishing pier where we explored and got a great view of the nearby lighthouse on St. Simons Island. Find out more at: BeachsideBikeRentals.com.

SOAK UP SOME HISTORY

Just like Florida, Georgia is rife with local history and lore. In the late 1800s, the island became an exclusive hunting club for big names at the time including Vanderbilt, Pulitzer and Rockefeller. Today, the former private retreat is now one of the largest preservation projects in the southeast and is surrounded by historic homes, cottages, chapels and ruins. You’ll also find the historic wharf, cemetery and The Wanderer Memory Trail. This trail is a new self-guided educational experience, documenting the story of America’s last known slave ship as it illegally came ashore here 160 years ago. Then there is the Mosaic Museum offering an in-depth look at the island’s history.

You can explore on your own, or book tours of individual spots, by trolley to take in more landmarks or even in a replica 1930 Model T. In 1947, Georgia designated the entire island as a state park to preserve the stunning beauty and history it has to offer. EXPLORE TRULY SPECTACULAR BEACHES

Of course, as Floridians, we are no stranger to beaches. However, this little barrier island has some real stunners of its own. The crown jewel is definitely Driftwood Beach, located on the north point of the island and a short walk from the campground. Once a maritime forest, thousands of mountainous trees are now gnarled and eroded by the sea on the stunning white sand beach. The scene is surreal, as if from another world, and a definite must see on any trip to the island.

COMMUNE WITH NATURE IN A NEW WAY

There is so much to do on this tiny island that it can be hard to choose! If you have time, book a horseback ride on the beach, or a horse drawn carriage tour. Be sure to book ahead, especially if you have a larger group, as Golden Isles Carriage and Trail does their best to accommodate everyone, and may be able to squeeze you in on short notice. If you don’t have time to book a tour or go for a ride, you can always stop by the corral at Clam Creek (just a short walk from the campground) to give some love to the horses as they relax and eat. It’s always welcome, and it’s free! For more information visit: ThreeOaksFarm.org

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is another really cool spot, offering the chance to take a peek into the rehabilitation efforts and learn more about sea turtles in the area. Ranger Walks and informational lectures are offered at various times throughout the year, as well as a short hike around Horton Pond where you’ll find an abundance of wildlife. RELAX, RECHARGE AND ENJOY YOURSELF

The island’s Beach Village is the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploration before heading back to your lodging or home. With plenty of shops offering unique finds and souvenirs, along with an assortment of restaurants and treats, all within an easily walkable, car-free zone, it’s an ideal destination for families to enjoy.

As the sun set on our day of adventure and exploration, we took a moment to reflect on the memories made amidst the natural beauty and historical richness of Jekyll Island. While there’s no way to see all the island has to offer in a single day, I definitely wanted more and we already know this will be one of our new favorite destinations to visit time and time again.
