Sometimes the best adventures are hiding right in the middle of the city—and Jacksonville proves that point twice over. On a recent weekend trip up north, we decided to escape the usual beachside routine and head to the big city for a day of hiking, animal encounters, and urban wilderness. Our picks? Tree Hill Nature Center and the Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens—two nature-filled gems nestled in the middle of the city sprawl.
Tree Hill Nature Center
Because Tree Hill has shorter hours, we kicked off our day there, and it turned out to be the perfect place to set the tone for our nature adventure. Tree Hill is a 50-acre preserve right in the heart of Jacksonville’s Arlington neighborhood, surrounded by neighborhoods, shopping centers, and traffic—but you’d never guess it once you step inside.

Inside the two-story nature center, we explored engaging exhibits on the region’s ecosystems, wildlife, and conservation. Avery was instantly captivated—especially by the live animal exhibits, which included everything from turtles and fish to skunks. She was especially enthralled with the touch tank, gently petting turtles and watching them swim over for a shell rub. One corner of the center houses The Rattlesnake Conservancy, where you can see a variety of venomous and nonvenomous snakes safely on display, who all kept a very close eye on us as we made our way through.

Outside, we discovered an entertaining crew of barnyard animals. A group of goats and chickens were relaxing in a large coop, but once they spotted us holding a bag of treats (available for purchase inside), they made a dramatic entrance across a goat-sized sky-bridge and surrounded us like we were walking vending machines. It was chaotic in the best way, and Avery was beside herself with laughter. Tree Hill made for a great warm-up—educational, hands-on, and easy enough to enjoy in just an hour or two.

Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens
After a quick lunch, we drove less than 10 minutes down the road to the Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens (JABG). Set on 136 acres, this sprawling sanctuary somehow manages to feel completely wild and untouched, even though it’s surrounded by city life. It was almost surreal to hike through live oak hammocks and pine flatwoods while hearing the faint hum of traffic from a nearby highway. Nature, meet the suburbs.

The Arboretum offers seven different hiking trails that wind through 13 natural ecosystems, from freshwater creeks and tidal marshes to upland forests and dry prairies. We chose several of the short loops and linked them together to explore about 2.5 miles total, though it felt like much more with the constantly changing landscapes. Along the marshy trail, we spotted hundreds of tiny crabs, scuttling along the path and up the trees like they were late for a meeting. Naturally, Avery was ready with her Adventure Bag complete with critter keeper and magnifying glass—to observe a few up close before releasing them.

As we explored the bottomland forest, we gently rolled back fallen logs and found all kinds of wiggling insects and shiny beetles, and hiked up small slopes through oak canopies before winding back down along a tranquil creek. At several points, it truly felt like we had wandered into completely different parks. It’s an experience that’s easy to tailor to your group—whether you’re looking for a short stroll on a paved path or a longer trek through varied terrain.
