Since its humble beginnings in 1982, the Daytona Holiday Boat Parade has evolved from a local vision into one of the most anticipated holiday traditions in the region. What began as an idea sparked by the Marina Point Yacht Club, inspired by the glittering spectacle of the Fort Lauderdale Boat Parade, has grown into a beloved event that brings joy to thousands of spectators along the Halifax River every December.
PARADE HISTORY
The first parade, led by Commodore Jeff Schulz, captured the imagination of the Daytona Beach community, with boats of all shapes and sizes decked out in holiday lights. While the early years saw a few changes in venues and organizing teams, the dedication to creating a magical holiday experience has never wavered. What began with a small group of yachts has turned into a festive tradition that shines as bright as the lights on the boats themselves.

By the late 1990s, the event was on the brink of fading away, but the Halifax River Yacht Club stepped in to save this cherished parade. In 2000, the club formed a special committee to ensure the parade would thrive for years to come. Today, the parade is not only a symbol of community spirit, but also a competition that brings out the best in local boat captains as they vie for top honors in categories like theme, creativity, and execution.
2024 EVENT DETAILS
This year, the parade returns on Saturday, December 21, starting at 6:30 p.m., promising an even more dazzling display as boats adorned with twinkling lights and festive décor cruise the Halifax River. The parade route begins just north of the Seabreeze Bridge and winds its way past the Halifax River Yacht Club, concluding at the Halifax Harbor Marina, where judging will take place. Spectators from across the region will gather on bridges and along the riverbank to take in the spectacle, cheering on their favorite boats as they pass by.
GIVING BACK TO VETERANS
But this year’s event isn’t just about the beauty of the boats – it’s also about giving back. For the first time, all proceeds from the registration fees will be donated to the Veterans Support Fund, a local 501(c)(3) charity based in Daytona Beach, who in turn goes on to support older girls in the foster care system. Founded to support disabled veterans in the area, the Veterans Support Fund provides vital resources and experiences that ensure these heroes are never forgotten. From organizing activities and concerts to delivering necessities, holiday gifts, and dinners out, the fund’s efforts are entirely powered by volunteers, with 100% of donations going directly to veterans in need.

This year’s parade offers an opportunity to do more than enjoy the holiday spirit – it’s a chance to give back to those who have given so much. By registering a boat or sponsoring the event, participants and supporters alike will be helping to bring joy and support to the veterans who call this community home.
Whether you’re a first-time captain or a seasoned sailor, there’s room for everyone in this year’s parade. You don’t have to be a member of the Halifax River Yacht Club to participate, making this a truly inclusive event that welcomes all boaters who want to share in the holiday spirit and give back to a worthy cause. Registration closes on December 14, 2024 so be sure to sign up soon.

For those who’d like to join in on the fun, whether by entering a boat, sponsoring the event, or contributing to the swag bags for captains, registration details are available on the Halifax River Yacht Club website at HRYC.com. You can also call the club directly at (386) 255-7459 or email FrontDesk@HRYC.com for more information on how to get involved or to get your registration form.
So, as the holiday season approaches, make sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, December 21. Gather your family, friends, and neighbors to witness the magic of the Daytona Holiday Boat Parade, where the spirit of the season lights up the water – and this year, the hearts of our local veterans.
