My girls and I just had the opportunity to check out the new Splatzz black light painting studio, located inside of the Daytona Grande Oceanfront Resort (422 N. Atlantic Ave, Suite A). Their motto is “it’s ok to throw paint,” and that is exactly what we did!
What to Expect at Splatzz Studio
I do not typically consider myself a creative or “artsy” person, but having three daughters means that we have glitter, paint and projects all over the house! This leads me to appreciate our local businesses and events that take care of the messy parts of arts and crafts for me.
Everyone suits up in full-body smocks, gloves, and footies to protect clothes and skin before entering the dark studio. The room is set up with stations for each person: canvas on easel, neon paint colors that glow in the dark, various brushes, and a water spray bottle to increase the splatter.
When you run out of room on your canvas or have too much paint on your gloves, you can even add some to the walls! The couple that owns the studio, Dave and Geri, welcome creativity and are incredibly helpful with set up and finishing your projects. You can take your canvas home the day of or let it dry overnight to pick up later.
Gather 2 Grow in Port Orange
For a little less mess and more diverse options, Gather 2 Grow in Port Orange (94 Dunlawton Ave.) has both a store to shop local artisans and a variety of classes that they offer throughout the month for you to try your own hand at projects. They similarly have painting on canvas, but you can also paint wine glasses and clothing. Outside of painting, you can learn how to make a wreath, resin charcuterie board, candles, or jewelry. Their Facebook page has a monthly calendar of classes, or you can contact Terri to set up your own private event!
Kids Zone at the One Daytona Art Festival 2025
Lastly, the One Daytona Art Festival is back this year on April 5 and 6 (1 Daytona Blvd). Adults and kids alike can stroll the festival to meet the artists and even purchase their products. As I must often remind my kids to not touch the art pieces, I appreciate that they have a Kids Zone set up with various crafts for my kids to try and bring home their finished project. My eldest really enjoyed a stamp project one year where she painted a rubber stamp of Pikachu to adorn her paper and a paper craft “monster.”
Local Art and Creative Spaces in Daytona Beach
I’m grateful for the local businesses and events that encourage and develop each of my girls’ artistic abilities. I often feel like our home is bursting at the seams with project kits and supplies, so any chance to work with professionals and use their gear is welcomed!
Here’s to having an artsy April and only leaving one dilemma left… where to put the finished creations!
