Volusia County Mosquito Control is hosting two tire amnesty events to remove old tires from residents’ properties, which serve as common mosquito breeding grounds. Residents can dispose of up to 20 tires per person during the events at no charge.
The events will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., in New Smyrna Beach and Pierson.
• Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Volusia County Mosquito Control Facility, 801 South St., New Smyrna Beach
• Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Volusia County Road and Bridge equipment staging site at the intersection of Blackburn Road and South County Road 3 in Pierson
Entrances to events will be marked with flags, and staff will be onsite to guide residents to a drive-thru drop-off route.
Apart from disposing of old tires, the most crucial action residents can take to contribute to mosquito control is to regularly empty containers with stagnant water. Volusia County Mosquito Control also recommends wearing clothing that covers the skin and using mosquito repellents according to the label, that contain DEET picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, and IR3535.
