Join us for our next Florida history book club meeting at the Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art where we will be discussing A Tropical Frontier: Tales of Old Florida.
The Southern Frontier: A roadless, watery wilderness, uninviting to all but the most stouthearted and adventurous. As great cities were springing up in places like St. Louis, Denver, and San Francisco, the lower peninsula of Florida endured. Here, the panther, the alligator, and the bald eagle remained safe from the restless, meddlesome hands of civilization, continuing as they had for eons past. Renegade Indians, pirates, hurricanes, and man-eating animals – not to mention venomous snakes and bloodthirsty hordes of mosquitoes – reigned supreme. It took a certain kind of person to boldly venture into such an inhospitable environment where a man had only himself and his family upon which to depend. It took men and women with not only vision, but backbone and grit, people like the MacLeods, Dawsons, and Hackensaws, true pioneers who confronted whatever came their way, together, as a family. From shipwrecks to Indian uprisings to buried treasure, blockade runners to murderous beach tramps, and the sad, lonely life of the solitary beachcomber, Tales of Old Florida takes the reader back to a singular time and place that will never be seen again. Above all, Tales of Old Florida is an epic saga of survival and prosperity, love and love lost, and most important, the power of the human spirit to prevail.
RSVP by calling the Museum at 386-255-0285 or register online.
Free for members, $5.00 for future members.

Patti LaBelle will perform on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Peabody Auditorium.
Beautiful simply does not describe the incomparable force known to the world as Patti LaBelle. As time continues to evolve, the soulful songbird’s name has become synonymous with grace, style, elegance and class. Belting out classic rhythm and blues renditions, pop standards and spiritual sonnets have created the unique platform of versatility that she is known and revered for.
It’s a small wonder that LaBelle has time for anything else in between recording and touring, but she makes time, and the world is oh so happy that she does! She has written six books, “Don’t Block the Blessings,” “LaBelle Cuisine: Recipes to Sing About,” “Patti’s Pearls,” “Patti LaBelle’s Lite Cuisine,” “Recipes for the Good Life” and “Desserts LaBelle.” Recently, Patti released a 20th anniversary edition of her New York Times bestselling cookbook, “LaBelle Cuisine,” featuring three new recipes.
Additionally, LaBelle has been featured in popular films and television programs including “A Soldier’s Story,” “A Different World,” “American Horror Story,” “Empire,” “Star” and “The Kominsky Method,” and starred in her own television series, “Out All Night.” She’s also wowed television audiences with unforgettable performances on hit shows including “Dancing with the Stars” and “The Masked Singer,” and starred in Broadway productions of “Your Arms are Too Short to Box with God,” “Fela” and “After Midnight.”
In 2007, she introduced “Patti’s Good Life,” a successful food and lifestyle brand that offers a variety of frozen comfort foods, breakfast items and desserts, including her world-famous sweet potato pie. The “Patti’s Good Life” brand is available at retailers across the U.S. including Walmart and Target. Always a person to take on new challenges, in 2017 LaBelle launched a record label, GPE Records, and released her first jazz album, “Bel Hommage.”
Although she is an award-winning entertainer, author and entrepreneur, LaBelle’s work as a humanitarian is just as noteworthy. She remains an advocate for adoption, diabetes, cancer, HIV / AIDS and many other causes and non-profit initiatives. While she has reached the heights of success throughout her more than 60-year career, LaBelle has also endured and survived personal strife. Within a 10-year period, she lost her mother, three sisters and best friend to diabetes and cancer. In 1994, she was diagnosed with diabetes and shortly thereafter became a spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association.

Public Lecture: Rebuilding Our Beaches
Nov 16, 2023·Thu, 6:30 PM
Marine Discovery Center, 520 Barracuda Blvd, New Smyrna Beach

What happens when hurricanes wash away sand dunes and the plants that hold the dunes together? How do the plants get restored in highly dynamic areas? And does displaced sand always return to the beaches in time for sea turtle nesting season?
Jennifer Winters of the Volusia County Environmental Management office will answer these questions in her presentation, “Beach Recovery and Rebuilding: What Can Residents Do to Help?”
Winters will explain what the county’s environmental office does or can do to help restore the beach. She will also discuss and can answer basic questions about the benefits of replanting dune plants and permits required for replanting. In addition, she will discuss how this year’s sea turtle nesting program logged record numbers in spite of massive storm damage to Volusia County beaches in 2022.
Winters is a Volusia County native who has been working with the Volusia County Environmental Management Division since 2002. She has worked for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection — all in different positions as an environmental specialist.
She has worked with the county’s sea turtle conservation program in various roles and now also oversees the county’s Manatee Protection Plan program in the role of Protected Species Specialist (PSS).
Winters has more than 20 years of experience along Volusia County beaches and is familiar with the seasonal and long-term changes in the dynamic beach environment. A Coastal Master Naturalist and Natural Resource Leadership Institute alum, she is a former part owner in a native plant nursery and has overseen multiple habitat restoration efforts throughout her career.
MDC’s Public Lecture Series is free, but donations to the center are always appreciated. Pre-registration is requested – visit https://marinediscoverycenter.org/monthly-lecture-series/ or click the ticket link on this FB event page.

Take a bite out of freshly caught fried fish; let the little ones participate in the annual kid fish clinic; sip on a craft beer as you sit and listen to live music, and more. There will be good food, great memories and riverfront fun.
This Ormond Beach tradition is about so much more than food. Held right along Ormond’s sparkling riverfront, the event features all-day activities including paddleboard adventures led by Waters Edge, local artisans, and endless kid’s activities. Kiddos can join in on the community build with blocks project. Stay awhile for the coloring & crafts, balloon art, bouncy houses, and appearances with a local children’s book author. Still have more energy to burn? Put on a knockerball and play a bubble game or join the giant foam party!
Of course, our popular Kid Fish fishing clinic will be back this year – sponsored by Hull’s Seafood. Kids ages 4-12 can go through our learning stations to find out more about casting, knot tying and ethical angling.
