Marine Discovery Center’s Sept. 21 lecture focuses on conservation

The Marine Discovery Center has long partnered with numerous agencies and universities in a variety of conservation and restoration initiatives, including the popular Shuck & Share oyster recycling program.

Dr. Melinda Donnelly of the University of Central Florida will discuss many of those various partnerships during MDC’s September Public Lecture Series set for Thursday, Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m.

Dr. Donnelly is a marine conservation scientist at the University of Central Florida. For the last 19 years, her research has focused on Florida estuarine ecology and restoration, including mangrove, oyster reef and seagrass habitats in the Indian River Lagoon system.

Teaching at UCF has allowed her to share her passion for research and conservation with students and to engage them in hands-on opportunities in the field of marine conservation.

Donnelly also has worked directly with MDC staff and volunteers in a variety of shoreline restoration projects on the Indian River Lagoon, including Shuck & Share and shoreline plantings. She plans to discuss a variety of topics related to UCF’s partnership with MDC.

MDC’s Public Lecture Series is free, but donations to the center are always appreciated. Pre-registration is requested.

Guests attending the lecture are not required, but may wear masks and practice social distancing during the indoor event.

The Marine Discovery Center is located off the North Causeway at 520 Barracuda Blvd., New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Guests attending the lecture should plan to use Quay Assisi to access MDC due to bridge construction on Barracuda Boulevard.

For more information about the lecture, contact the Marine Discovery Center at 386-428-4828.

TOUCH & GO: Composed of a group of top notch musicians, Touch & Go is a Tribute to the Music of The Cars. The look, sound and feel of the iconic New Wave band, The Cars, lives on in Touch & Go’s ever-so precise replication in all of The Cars hits. Packing a full 90 minute set of music spanning the entire Cars catalogue, you will be transported back in time to the late 70’s and 80’s when this band launched their career. With the memorable guitar hooks, the synthesizer-laden hits, and the perfectly matched voice of Ric Ocasek by Touch & Go’s lead vocalist Jeff Clemens, you will have a concert experience that you won’t soon forget!

With their sleek, mechanical sound inspired by an interesting cross of punk rock and bubblegum pop and a little garage rock in there, Boston-based quintet the Cars racked up a string of platinum albums and Top 40 singles, becoming the most successful American new wave band of the late ’70s and early ’80s. The group’s eponymous debut album appeared in the summer of 1978 and it slowly built a following thanks to the hit singles “Just What I Needed” (number 27), “My Best Friend’s Girl” (number 35), and “Good Times Roll” (number 41). The Cars stayed on the charts for over two-and-a-half years, delaying the release of the group’s second album, and it eventually sold over six million copies. The Cars broke up in 1988, but their music’s popularity and influence never faded. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFO ON THE BAND
