The Athens Theatre Company Presents: Misery

  • Friday, September 22, 2023  – Sunday, October 15, 2023  @ Athens Theatre 124 North Florida Avenue, DeLand, FL

Stephen King’s critically acclaimed novel, Misery is set to hit the stage! Someone can love you so much it hurts—you. The life of Paul, a successful romance novelist, is saved (or is it?) when he is rescued from a car crash by his “Number One Fan,” Annie Wilkes. Audiences will remember this as the knockout (pun intended) role that won Kathy Bates an Oscar for Best Actress in 1991. When Paul wakes up, he realizes he is being held captive in her remote, secluded home. As he slowly begins to get better, Annie reads the manuscript to his newest novel and becomes engulfed in rage when she discovers the author has killed off her favorite character, Misery Chastain! Annie forces Paul to write a new “Misery” novel, and he quickly begins to realize that his new caretaker/warden has no intention of letting him go anywhere. As Annie continues to unravel and lose her grip on reality, she has Paul writing day and night. It’s as if his life depended on it, which—it turns out—it does. Paul struggles to pen a book he doesn’t want to write and begins to realize that if he does not find a way out of this living nightmare, Misery will be much more than a character in one of his books; it’ll be his sole existence!

OCTOBER 19:

The Rocky Horror Picture Show Live Shadow Cast Performance

  • Thursday, October 19, 2023  – Friday, October 20, 2023  @ Athens Theatre124 North Florida Avenue, DeLand, FL

Don your leather jacket, corset, and fishnet tights, because on Friday, September 9th, DeLand Pride and the Absent Friends are bringing the cult classic “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” back to the Athens Theatre after much “antici… pation.”

Whether you are experiencing “Rocky” for the first or 100th time (as long as you are over the age of 18) we invite you to come and do “The Time Warp” again.

The evening will consist of a pre-show featuring DeLand Pride and the Absent Friends (with emcee Robert Baldwin), the ever-popular 1975 20th Century Fox film, live shadow cast (in other words, costumed actors portraying the movie while it is being screened above), dancing, and audience participation (with callbacks and prop bags).

The film’s plot revolves around a newly engaged and admittedly naïve couple (Brad and Janet) who get stranded on the side of the road during a stormy night and seek refuge in the nearby castle of a strange (yet alluring) Dr. Frank-N-Furter. From there the story becomes increasingly more ridiculous, raunchy, and above all, fun.

To make the show more accessible, we have moved the “midnight showing” up to 8:00 p.m., opening with all the “normal” fun frivolity of welcomes, initiating the “Rocky Virgins,” and giving patrons a chance to purchase bags filled with audience participation props.

The audience is encouraged to come in costume, sing along with the songs, dance the dances, and utilize their approved audience participation props.

FL state law requires us to state that this event is an 18 and over event only. Individuals under the age of 18 will not be admitted. A Valid ID will be necessary for entry.

Live at the Athens Theatre
