You’ve read “The Open Boat,” now Meet Captain Murphy as he tells his part of the story of the gunrunning steamship Commodore which shipwrecked fourteen miles off the Daytona coast on a bitterly cold January 1897 night.  The Commodore was heading to Cuba to supply arms and munitions to rebels trying to overthrow Cuba’s Spanish colonial government.  Murphy, along with famous American writer Stephen Crane and two other seamen row the captain’s ten-foot-long dinghy for thirty-one hours keeping in their sight the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse rising off the far distant shore.  Crane reports the misadventure to his newspaper, and with Murphy’s help, eventually writes the Classic American Masterpiece short story.

Bonkerz Comedy Night

Join in at the Root Family Auditorium at MOAS for a fun night with Bonkerz Comedy Club featuring Brian Aldridge as seen on Comedy Central Up Next and FOX’s Laughs, with special guest TBA.

Brian Aldridge is a fraternity boy all grown up. A “reformed frat boy” if you will. Already with three television appearances, Comedy Central Up Next, FOX’s “Laughs” & “Trial By Laughter”, under his belt and no doubt more to come, Brian is a rising comedy star. Brian can also be heard on “The Bob & Tom Show”. His sarcastic delivery and sharp wit will have you rolling with laughter one minute and asking yourself, “Did he really just say that?” the next. A Chicago native, Brian got his start opening for great comedians like Dave Chappelle, Carlos Mencia, Chelsea Handler, Bill Burr, Damon Wayons, and others who will undoubtedly be offended now that they weren’t mentioned. A veteran of countless comedy festivals and headliner of great comedy rooms all over the country, Brian is set to soon be a household name. Don’t miss the chance to see this talented man!

Doors open at 6:00pm. This comedy show is recommended for those ages 18 and older. Seating is limited and advanced RSVP is strongly encouraged by visiting MOAS.org or by calling the Museum at 386-255-0285.

County offers master naturalist training

Master naturalists not only get their feet wet and their hands dirty, they also learn about plants, animals, ecology and environmental ethics.

Environmental enthusiasts can earn a certificate in Marine Habitat Restoration by taking a 24-hour course offered by Volusia County Environmental Management, UF/IFAS Extension Volusia County and the Marine Discovery Center. The course will focus on restoration of seagrass, artificial reefs, corals and sponges.

The non-degree, hybrid program was developed by the University of Florida. It will run from July 31 through Aug. 11 and includes a trip to the Florida Keys. Through online, classroom, field trip and practical experience, participants will learn about Florida’s natural marine habitats and ways to restore them.

The $200 course fee covers educational materials, field trips and classroom sessions taught by staff. There will be an additional $125-plus accommodation fee for the Florida Keys portion of the course. Participants completing the course will receive pins, patches and certificates identifying them as Florida master naturalists.

The registration deadline is July 20. Class size is limited to 20.
