My love for nature grew during high school as I obsessively photographed various islands throughout Japan. My love for our community heightened after my experiences as an art educator, Meals on Wheels coordinator, VPK volunteer, and art gallery assistant. As a daughter of a US Army 82nd Airborne veteran, I am so honored and grateful to work with the Ormond Memorial Art Museum & Gardens. The Girl Who Wore Freedom

AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTRY FILM TO BE SHOWN JULY 13

Film & Art Event in Ormond Beach to Celebrate Freedom and Those Who Protect It

ORMOND BEACH – The Ormond Memorial Art Museum & Gardens is honored to announce its community screening of The Girl Who Wore Freedom on Thursday, July 13. The documentary invites audiences to discover the untold stories of D-Day from the men, women, and children who lived through German occupation and Allied liberation of Normandy, France.

Powerful and deeply personal, the film tells the stories of an America that lived its values, instilling a pride in country that is in danger of becoming a relic of the past. The Girl Who Wore Freedom reminds viewers of who we are as Americans when we are our very best. When we are standing up for those who are poor, oppressed, especially those whose freedoms and liberties have been stolen. It will be a reminder that individual and national acts of bravery, care and compassion have the power to impact others for generations.

The evening will begin at 5 p.m. inside the Museum, 78 E. Granada Blvd., for a wine and cheese reception that offers the opportunity to meet filmmaker Christian Taylor and other special guests. Taylor found inspiration for the film in 2015 when she followed her son, Sgt. Hunter Taylor of the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division, to an annual D-Day ceremony in Normandy, and experienced one of the most patriotic events she had ever seen.

At 6 p.m., film viewers will be escorted across the street for the screening inside St. James Episcopal Church’s Parish Hall, 44 S. Halifax Drive. Seating includes movie theater style snacks and an interactive Q&A with the filmmaker following the film. Tickets for this free event may be secured at ormondartmuseum.org, or by calling OMAM at 386-676-3347.

Summer Florida History Con

An all-day celebration of Florida history.

Schedule:

10:30am: Dr. Ashley Lear, “Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings: At Home in Florida”

When Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings moved to Cross Creek in 1928, she found a new home among the scrub pines and Cracker community of rural Florida that inspired her Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Yearling, along with other novels and works of short fiction. Her works offer a rich and varied depiction of the flora and fauna from her own explorations and research into the natural surroundings of Cross Creek. In this presentation, Dr. Ashley Lear, author of The Remarkable Kinship of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Ellen Glasgow, will share the story of what brought Rawlings to Florida, how it solidified her career as a novelist, and the ways in which Rawlings gave back to the state that gave her so much.

11:30am: Florida: A History in Pictures

Join Mike McGinness and Jeff Davies for a photographic account of the Sunshine State through more than 130 images ― many of them published for the first time. From the stone fort at St. Augustine to the Everglades (or “The Big Swamp” as it was called early in the 20th century) to Bok Tower Gardens, and much more, Florida: A History in Pictures offers a stunning portrait of our state. Hear how McGinness and Davies tracked down these rare photos and discovered the stories behind the pictures.

12:30pm: Dr. Joseph Vetter, “The Riviera Hotel: Centennial Celebration 1923-2023”

Join Joseph Vetter for a unique history presentation on the Riviera Hotel Rio Vista -A Remarkable Historical Gem in Holly Hill! From the early Twenties, this national landmark continues to shine bright on US 1 in our community. Immerse yourself in its amazing history!

1:30pm: Zackary Gilmore of  Rollins College, “Great Gathering Places! Ritual, Feasting, and Macroscale Interaction at Florida Shell Mounds”

Beginning at least 7,300 years ago, Indigenous Floridians began piling huge quantities of shellfish at important historical and religious places on the landscape. This tradition continued in various forms for the next four millennia, culminating in the erection of hundreds of monumental-scale mounds across the state. The function and meaning of these structures have been the source of considerable archaeological debate, with interpretations ranging from unintentional heaps of domestic garbage to well-planned monuments and vacant ceremonial centers. Recent research reconstructing the movement of Florida’s earliest pottery vessels suggests that at least some shell mounds were important ritual gathering places for macroscale communities whose membership spanned hundreds of kilometers.

2:30pm: Leslie Kemp Poole, “Saving Florida: Women’s Fight for the Environment in the Twentieth Century”

Before Florida women could vote, they were working hard—usually in grassroots efforts—to save the state’s natural beauty by protecting birds, forests, and parks. This talk will highlight some of the women who participated in these efforts across the state and whose legacy we are still enjoying.

Leslie Kemp Poole is an associate professor of environmental studies at Rollins College. A fourth-generation Floridian, Poole is an award-winning historian and journalist with a focus on the state’s environmental history.

Ted Nugent

Ted Nugent will be performing at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at Peabody Auditorium.

Nugent has carved a permanent place in rock and roll history as the ultimate guitar-shredding showman, selling more than 40 million albums, performing over 6,500 high-octane live shows and continuing to set attendance records at venues around the globe.

Nugent was named Detroit’s “Greatest Guitar Player of All Time” by readers of MLive, and his “no-holds-barred” career spans five decades of multi-platinum hits. From the ground breaking Amboy Dukes’ hit, “Journey to the Center of the Mind,” to classics including “Stranglehold” (ranked in the Top 100 Classic Rock Songs and No. 1 Guitar Lick), “Cat Scratch Fever,” (32nd Best Hard Rock Song of All Time) Damn Yankees chartbuster “High Enough” and cult classic “Fred Bear,” (the most requested song for radio airplay in Michigan & Wisconsin), Nugent and his inimitable sound have been featured on VH1’s “Behind the Music,” A & E’s “Biography” and more.
