Nature and Environmental Events with the Lyonia Environmental Center

The Lyonia Environmental Center (LEC) offers insights into Volusia County’s fragile ecosystems through hands-on displays and educational programs. It’s part of the Deltona regional Library complex at 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona.

The center’s environmental specialists and volunteers promote an understanding of the county’s natural environment, the heritage it sustains, and the challenges it faces. 

Admission is always free!

NEW Hours of Operation (as of Friday, October 1, 2021):

  • Tuesday through Saturday  9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Sundays 10:00 am  – 4 pm
  • Closed Mondays

LEC staff has established public program procedures based on current guidelines. These procedures are subject to change based on guidance at the local, state and federal levels. Programs may be modified at any time as needed.

Sept 10 @ 10 – 11 AM – Lyonia Photography Club

Lyonia Preserve has unlimited opportunities for photographing birds, reptiles and plants. Join volunteers from the West Volusia Audubon Society for this monthly program series, which includes classroom instruction and field opportunities to hone your photography skills. All skill levels are welcome.

Sept 10 @ 2:30 – 3 PM – Reptile Bingo

Bring the family to enjoy some friendly competition and learn about reptiles during a round of Reptile Bingo. Participants can meet some of LEC’s reptile ambassadors after the game.

Sept 11 @ 10 – 11:30 AM – Parks for pollinators BioBlitz

The LEC will take part in the National Recreation and Park Association’s annual BioBlitz, a national campaign to raise awareness and involve the  community in the worldwide pollinator crisis. Learn how to use the iNaturalist app and help staff find 50 species in Lyonia Preserve. This program is recommended for ages 7 and older. Wear closed toe shoes, bring water and be prepared to hike on unpaved sugar sand trails.

Sept 11 @ 2 – 3 PM – Waterscopes

Create a waterscope, which you can use to discover the world below the water’s surface. Staff will provide guidance and materials.

Sept 17 @ 10 – 11 AM – Nature branch weaving

Learn basic branch-weaving techniques during this outdoor class. This program is designed for families and children ages 5 and up. Space is limited.

Sept 17 @ 2 – 3 PM -Critter corner

Explore Lyonia Environmental Center and meet the center’s animal ambassadors. Staff will handle the animals and answer questions.

Sept 18 @ 2 – 2:30 PM – Aquarium scavenger hunt

Using careful observation skills and drawings, explore the LEC’s aquarium habitats and the animals that live there. The person who makes the most discoveries will win a prize.

Sept 24 @ 2 – 2:30 PM – Snake-o-rama scavenger hunt

Learn about Florida’s venomous and non-venomous snake species as you search for clues revealing fun facts about these scaly, slithering creatures. Participants can also meet one of LEC’s snake animal ambassadors.

Sept 25 @ 11 AM – 12 PM – Nature explorers

Enjoy some screen-free family time while exploring the natural world. Join staff on a tour of the LEC pollinator gardens and learn about the plants and pollinators that are visiting. Each participant will go home with a pollinator seed packet.

Sept 25 @ 2 – 2:30 PM – Water cycle bracelets

Children 5 and older and their families can learn about the water cycle while making a take-home bracelet in Lyonia Preserve’s outdoor pavilion.

Look for the beginning signs of fall on this guided hike along Lyonia Preserve’s orange and red trails. Wear closed toe shoes, bring water and be prepared to hike on unpaved sugar sand.

Celebrate World Animal Day by visiting the LEC for a meet and greet with one of its resident animal ambassadors. Learn what their life is like at the center and how that animal survives in its natural habitat.

Learn how to identify the various fungi that grow in Volusia County, including the edible ones. Afterward, the group will look for mushrooms growing in Lyonia Preserve. Wear closed toe shoes, bring water and be prepared to walk on sugar sand.

Oct 9 @ 2 – 3 PM – Diving into the past

Join scuba diver Derek Demeter as he describes some of the amazing prehistoric animals he has uncovered while exploring rivers and oceans around Florida. Demeter, director of the Emil Buehler Planetarium at Seminole State College, will also describe some of the distant planets that might have oceans and life.
