Nature and Environmental Events with the Lyonia Environmental Center

The Lyonia Environmental Center (LEC) offers insights into Volusia County’s fragile ecosystems through hands-on displays and educational programs. It’s part of the Deltona regional Library complex at 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona.

The center’s environmental specialists and volunteers promote an understanding of the county’s natural environment, the heritage it sustains, and the challenges it faces. 

Admission is always free!

NEW Hours of Operation (as of Friday, October 1, 2021):

  • Tuesday through Saturday  9:00 am – 4:00 pm
  • Sundays 10:00 am  – 4 pm
  • Closed Mondays

LEC staff has established public program procedures based on current guidelines. These procedures are subject to change based on guidance at the local, state and federal levels. Programs may be modified at any time as needed.

Aug 6 @ 10 – 11 AM – Rain barrel workshop

Discover the importance of using rain barrels to conserve water. Steve Kintner, vice president West Volusia Audubon Society, will explain how to assemble and properly place a rain barrel for water collection. A limited number of rain barrels will be available for purchase.

August 6 @ 10 – 11 AM – Tiny trekkers

Children ages 2 to 7 can take a short hike, make a take-home craft and listen to the book “Hello Sun!” Wear closed toe shoes,bring water and be prepared to hike on unpaved sugar sand trails.

August 7 @ 2 – 3 PM – Nature film

Bring the family to watch the documentary, “Florida’s Wild Side,” which looks at the state’s iconic wildlife, told by residents, artists, scientists and enthusiasts – all of whom share a passion for Florida’s wildlife.

August 7 @ 2:30 – 3 PM – Soil science

Discover the secret world beneath your feet. While investigating the role soil plays, staff will explain how scientists classify soil and the unique living things that call it home. Participants will make some “edible soil” to uncover the different layers. This program is recommended for families and children ages 7 and older.

August 13 @ 10 – 11 AM – Lyonia Photography Club

Lyonia Preserve has unlimited opportunities for photographing birds, reptiles and plants. Join volunteers from West Volusia Audubon Society for this monthly program series, which includes in-class instruction and field opportunities to hone your skills. All skill levels are welcome.

August 13 @ 2 – 3 PM – Plants for birds

Learn how to prepare your garden for the fall. Attendees will receive a free native plant from the Friends of Lyonia Environmental Center.

August 14 @ 10 – 11:30 AM – Species searching challenge

Learn how to use the iNaturalist app and look for and identify 50 species in Lyonia Preserve. This program is recommended for participants ages 7 and older.

August 14 @ 2 – 3:30 PM – Animal care behind the scenes

If you’re curious about animal care or just want to meet some of the LEC’s resident animal ambassadors, join staff for an afternoon of feeding.  Bring your camera for a photo opportunity with one of the center’s animal ambassadors.

August 18 @ 11 AM – 12 PM – Food consumption and waste reduction

Kalan Taylor, director of the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension, will talk about food systems and food consumption. She will also share tips on reducing food waste and supporting the local food system.

August 20 @ 10 – 11 AM – Who’s been here?

Learn how to identify animals by their tracks and scat during this short walk through Lyonia Preserve. Meet at the pavilion, 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona.

August 20 @ 2:30 – 3 PM – Critter corner

Bring the family to the LEC discovery room to view the center’s taxidermied critters, which include a Florida black bear, bobcat, raccoon and eastern diamondback rattlesnake. Bring a camera for a photo op.

August 21 @ 10 – 11:30 AM – Insect investigators

In this hands-on program, participants will learn about some of the places insects like to hide. Participants will collect insects to investigate their unique adaptations and the roles they play in the environment during a walk along the trails of Lyonia Preserve. The insects will be returned to their habitat.

August 21 @ 2 – 2:30 PM – Magnificent metamorphosis

Meet in the LEC’s amphitheater for a discussion about insect transformation. The group will stroll around the pollinator garden and search for bugs. Participants can take home a science grab and go kit, which includes a metamorphosis activity, for $3 each.

August 27 @ 10:30 – 11:30 AM – Leaf rubbing art

Learn about the structure of leaves that are found in Lyonia Preserve. Participants will use crayons and watercolor paint to create a leaf rubbing project.

August 27 @ 2 – 2:45 PM – Slugs from the sea

Nudibranchs are beautifully colored sea slugs that can be found in oceans around the world. Learn about some of their fascinating characteristics and test your observation skills as you participate in a scavenger hunt. This program is recommended for ages 6-13.

Children ages 5 and up can make butterfly lifecycle bracelets with their families. Staff will share fun facts about butterflies, their lifecycle and importance to the ecosystem.

September 2 @ 9 – 10 AM – Scrub stroll

Environmental specialists lead hikes through the scrub habitat of Lyonia Preserve every Friday. Be on the lookout for Florida scrub jays, gopher tortoises and other scrub animals.

September 3 @ 2 – 2:30 PM – Ant lions

Did you know ant lions can spend several years in their larval state before becoming a flying insect? Also known as doodlebugs, ant lions are small but fierce predators of ants. Join LEC staff to learn more about these amazing insects and view their pitfall traps.

Explore Lyonia Environmental Center and meet the center’s animal ambassadors. Staff will handle the animals and answer questions.

September 4 @ 2:30 – 3 PM – Saltwater tank feeding

Join staff at the saltwater aquarium as they feed the center’s marine animal ambassadors. Menu items include krill, seaweed and shrimp. Discover which critters enjoy that menu, their unique eating methods, and the important role each plays in our ecosystem.
