What’s Love Got to Do with It?

February – the month of feeling loved and special, or… lonely, pressured to buy candy and flowers, or depressed because you’re not in a relationship. Most people vocally loathe the commercialism as they stand in line for some heart-shaped object. Next to Christmas, this is one of the most stressful holiday months of the year – for both the giver and receiver.

Here is the truth. Like my Grandpa Rathwell always said, “There is no room for hate – only love.” Where does that feeling start? In every single one of us.

What’s love got to do with it? Everything. Self-love is the strongest love of all. We can’t love anyone else until we can truly love ourselves.

Benefits of Self Care and Self Love

Instant benefits of self-love, no matter what day or month it is, include:

  • Less Stress and Anxiety
  • A Higher Level of Satisfaction
  • A Boost in Attractiveness (Confidence)
  • Stronger Motivation
  • Health and Personal Growth

This is so important because it helps keep toxic people out of your life or off your Facebook. Bad habits are easier to break when you have self-love.

How do we practice putting our self-love into action? It doesn’t happen overnight, but with your genuine, dedicated efforts, it will happen.

Tips for Taking Care of and Loving Yourself

Practice affirmations or start your day with something that makes you happy. My husband, David, and I start every morning with our “Angel Cards.” You ask the angels what you should concentrate on today, draw a card, and see what their loving words of wisdom have to say.

I stopped watching the news on September 2, 2021. It was my birthday, and I was tired of all the daily negativity. It’s amazing how much less stress I feel and how I can go about my life with some of those “Good Old Days” feelings again.

Declutter your living and workspace. It’s amazing how that can help clean the mess in your mind and make you feel so free.

Make friends with the person in the mirror. Learn to love your body. It’s yours. You go way back with this body and have lots of memories to share. Freedom comes when you stop caring what others think of you.

Be your authentic self. When I am home alone, I amaze myself at what an outstanding singer, dancer, comedian and all-round performer I am. Sorry, I only perform for myself and my dogs, Donny and Marie. You will have to develop your own show! It’s a fun way to act silly and love yourself at the same time.

Whether you are in a relationship or on your own, you already have the best company in yourself.

Happy Valentine’s Day and every other day, too!
