Nature and Environmental Events with the Lyonia Environmental Center

The Lyonia Environmental Center (LEC) offers insights into Volusia County’s fragile ecosystems through hands-on displays and educational programs. It’s part of the Deltona regional Library complex at 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona.

The center’s environmental specialists and volunteers promote an understanding of the county’s natural environment, the heritage it sustains, and the challenges it faces. 

Admission is always free!

Hours of operation Due to Covid-19, they are currently only open:

  • Wednesday 4:00 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.
  • Saturday 9:00 am – 5:00 p.m.

A variety of events are held throughout the county each month, find the upcoming schedule below:

October 17 @ 10 AM – Saturday Soundwalk

Staff from the Atlantic Center for the Arts will lead this guided hike through Lyonia Preserve, focusing on the sounds and rhythms of the natural and urban worlds. Participating in a soundwalk can help people of all ages relieve stress, gain focus and develop a deeper understanding of how humans fit into the environment.

To allow for social distancing, the program will be limited to 10 persons. Registration is required; call 386-789-7207, ext. #21028. Walk-ins will not be permitted.

October 24 @ 1:30 PM – Feathered Friends

Feathers are good for flying, but they also help birds do much more than soar through the sky. Staff will discuss the various types and functions of feathers and share information about some citizen science projects, such as the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Project Feederwatch and the Great Backyard Bird Count.

October 28 @ 3 PM – Autumn Leaves

Learn about the magic of leaf structures and photosynthesis during this virtual program. As fall weather approaches, a seasonal change kicks off a chemical reaction within tree leaves, creating an array of autumn colors. Gather some backyard leaves, paper and crayons to follow along with LEC staff in a leaf-rubbing activity. An online link will be provided upon registration.

October 31 @ 9 AM – ‘Creepy, crawling creatures’ hike

Discover what arthropod and insect species may be out and during this guided hike through Lyonia Preserve.
