Jezebel at The Hub on Canal

Friday, June 19, 5:45-9pm, Art in the Form of Film with Paul Marino

In the ninth century B.C., the Biblical figure Jezebel, Queen of Israel, a strong-willed, independent, manipulative woman, “did evil in the sight of God”. Millenia later, Julie Marsden (Bette Davis), a strong, independent, manipulative and conniving woman behaved shockingly in the sight of her high-society New Orleans peers. Her abolitionist, feminist, banker fiancé, Preston Dillard (Henry Fonda), is embarrassed by her abhorent behavior at the annual Olympus Ball in 1852. One year later, we find the city suffering a terrible outbreak of yellow fever. Under William Wyler’s direction, this film earned Bette Davis the Best Actress Oscar, and Fay Bainter Best Supporting Actress as her loving Aunt Belle at the 11th Academy Awards in 1939. This remarkable film is as relevant today as it was in 1938. Sponsored by Tina Pritchard, Coldwell Banker – Coast Realty.
