Nature and Environmental Events with the Lyonia Environmental Center

The Lyonia Environmental Center (LEC) offers insights into Volusia County’s fragile ecosystems through hands-on displays and educational programs. It’s part of the Deltona regional Library complex at 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona.

The center’s environmental specialists and volunteers promote an understanding of the county’s natural environment, the heritage it sustains, and the challenges it faces. 

Admission is always free!

Hours of operation Due to Covid-19, they are currently only open:

  • Wednesday 4:00 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.
  • Saturday 9:00 am – 5:00 p.m.

LEC staff has established public program procedures based on current guidelines. These procedures are subject to change based on guidance at the local, state and federal levels. Programs may be modified at any time as needed.

A variety of events are held throughout the county each month, find the upcoming schedule below:

May 1 @ 10 AM – Tiny trekkers

Children ages 2 to 5 can take a short hike, make a take-home craft, and listen to the book “Ten Little Caterpillars.” Afterward, they can take a short, guided hike through Lyonia Preserve to experience the sights and sounds of the outdoors.

Participation is limited to 10 persons to allow for social distancing. Reservations are required; call 386-789-7207, ext. 21028.

May 8 @ 9 AM – Mother’s Day wildflower walk

Bring your mom, or someone special who has been like a mom to you, and enjoy a guided stroll through the trails of Lyonia Preserve. This activity is appropriate for avid hikers and those who just want to spend some time outdoors in nature. 

To allow for social distancing, the program will be limited to 10 persons. Registration is required; call 386-789-7207, ext. #21028. Walk-ins will not be permitted.

May 15 @ 10 AM – Pointless pollution

Participants in this virtual program will learn about local water quality issues and ways to reduce their contribution to water pollution. This program, which is appropriate for adults and teens, is funded in part by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. An online link will be provided to registrants.

May 22 @ 1:30 PM – Saturday ‘shellabration’

Did you know thattortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises?Celebrate World Turtle Day in the LEC’s Discovery Room by exploring the differences, picking up some fun facts about local species, and meeting the center’s resident turtle ambassadors. Staff will also discuss some Citizen Science projects.

May 29 @ 9 AM – Ecotones and ecosystems hike

An ecotone is a transitional area between two ecological communities; one example is a shift from a terrestrial to an aquatic ecosystem. Join LEC staff on a hike through Lyonia Preserve and learn how these overlapping areas are some of the richest areas of biodiversity. Staff will discuss the plants and animal species that use ecotones and the impacts of the “edge effect.”
