Nature and Environmental Events with the Lyonia Environmental Center

The Lyonia Environmental Center (LEC) offers insights into Volusia County’s fragile ecosystems through hands-on displays and educational programs. It’s part of the Deltona regional Library complex at 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona.

The center’s environmental specialists and volunteers promote an understanding of the county’s natural environment, the heritage it sustains, and the challenges it faces. 

Admission is always free!

Hours of operation Due to Covid-19, they are currently only open:

  • Wednesday 4:00 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.
  • Saturday 9:00 am – 5:00 p.m.

LEC staff has established public program procedures based on current guidelines. These procedures are subject to change based on guidance at the local, state and federal levels. Programs may be modified at any time as needed.

July 10 @ 1:30 PM – Sensational serpents

Join staff for a classroom presentation on some of the most commonly seen snake species in Volusia County. After the presentation, participants can meet some of the center’s reptile animal ambassadors.

July 17 @ 9 AM – Incredible insects hike

Venture out into Lyonia Preserve to learn about the beetles, two-striped walking sticks and spiders that live in the scrub habitat.

July 20 @ 9 AM – Planting for pollinators

Stroll through the center’s pollinator gardens in search of butterflies, moths and bees. Staff will share tips on creating an inviting habitat for these nectar seeking species and discuss some of plants that may attract pollinators to your garden all season long.

Participation is limited to 10 persons to allow for social distancing. Reservations are required; call 386-789-7207, ext. 21028.

July 24 @ 10 AM – Build your resilience

Climate resilience looks at the big picture, evaluating how communities plan and respond to disruptive events that threaten quality of life. This workshop, which will be offered in the classroom and online, will provide tips on becoming more resilient.

July 31 @ 1:30 PM – It’s a crab’s life

Visit the LEC’s resident saltwater hermit crabs and learn about their environment and connection to the ancient beach of Lyonia Preserve. Staff will also shed light on other intertidal invertebrates during this program, which will be presented in the Discovery Room.
