A Moment in Time: The 70s Chicago Club Scene –photography exhibition by documentary photographer Michael Abramson in the Fine Art Photography Gallery at The Hub on Canal

Soft opening – January 24 – 26, 2020

Public opening and reception – Saturday, February 1, 2020, 4-7pm

Exhibition runs through Sunday, March 29

The Hub on Canal is pleased to announce the opening of a special exhibition titled A Moment in Time: The 70s Chicago Club Scene by documentary photographer Michael Abramson (1948-2011).

Abramson began photographing the South Side as part of a Master’s thesis around Christmas 1974. Inspired by the work of Parisian master Brassai, Abramson spent 3 three years getting to know his subjects and gaining their trust. That led to the intimate work you see in this exhibition. His subjects let Abramson into their lives in the South Side’s key clubs such as Perv’s House, Pepper’s Hideout and the High Chaparral.

Abramson’s images from the South Side are juxtaposed in this exhibition against those captured from some of Chicago’s suburban dance halls. The patrons are older and likely dancing against the tide of all the change enveloping their younger counterparts. Photographed contemporaneously, the two sets of Abramson photographs were geographically close, but miles apart culturally.

Abramson went on, later in life, to be a noted portrait photographer and photojournalist. His portraiture included Oprah Winfrey, Ron Howard and Steven Spielberg. His work has appeared in Time, Newsweek and Fortune, among others.

Free to all.
