On May 31, 2019, Volusia students will officially be out for summer. The Marine Discovery Center (MDC), located in New Smyrna Beach, has lined up kid-friendly Summer Adventure Camps. The camps are designed for children, 16 and under, “to experience the water through the hands-on, feet- wet programs.”
Kids’ Summer Camps in New Smyrna Beach
All summer programs include MDC specialties like island exploration, science activities, marine related arts and crafts, field trips and shoreline studies of the salt marsh. Locals and visiting families can choose between 10 types of camps offered. Each camp is available for up to 20 participants for one week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., unless otherwise specified.
Summer Camps Available in June, July and August
Listed below are short descriptions of some of the most popular camps:
- Loggerheads, 20 campers (ages 4-7), $215: learn about plants and animals of the Indian River Lagoon (IRL). Includes a field trip to Ponce Inlet Lighthouse. Dates available in June, July and August.
- Mangrove Maniacs, 20 campers (ages 9-12), $240: engage in a variety of activities, including kayaking to develop naturalist skills through interpretation of the IRL and coastal waters. Camp also includes archery and a field trip. Dates available in July and August.
- Aquatic Adventures, 20 campers (ages 10-14), $315: Explore the IRL and Florida’s coast through various activities including surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding and fishing. Dates available in June and July.
- Lagoonys, 20 campers (ages 10-14), $315: Participants will focus on snorkeling as a way to explore the IRL and Florida’s coastal waters. Students snorkel in several different areas of the lagoon as well as several local springs to learn about marine life in their natural habitat. Dates available July 15-19.
Things to Do for Preschoolers in New Smyrna Beach
Preschoolers (ages 2-5) can participate in the summer fun during the Sea Squirts program offered on Wednesdays (June 26, July 24 and August 28) at 9:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. for one hour. Activities include examination of alive and skeletal species, arts and crafts, stories and games. Adults accompany their children. Cost is $5 per child and $5 per adult. Sea Squirts is offered all year long.
Exploration, conservation and education are the Marine Discovery Center’s key missions to the Indian River Lagoon and Florida’s coast. According to their mission statement, heightened public awareness is important to restoration and protection of these ecosystems.
Events and Programs at the Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach
Locals and visitors can support this mission by attending conservation lectures, education and special events, kayak and eco boat tours posted on the MDC’s website calendar. Successful annual fundraising events include a Farm to Table dinner and Lagoonacy, a family-friendly eco festival. Future events include the 9th annual Plein Air Paint Out, where live artists paint coastal seascape, in New Smyrna Beach scheduled October 22-26, 2019.
