Right Coast Wahine: Acting

These past few months have been very interesting for me. I had my first real audition for a play! Have you ever heard of Anne of Green Gables? It’s about a red-haired orphan named Anne who’s imagination and temper controls her and her adventures at Green Gables. This classic book turned movie was a favorite of mine, so I decided to audition!

At auditions we all sat down in chairs and Mrs. Karen, who is the director of the play, walked us through what we were doing. I was the first person called up. Once I shook out all the jitters I started, my first read wasn’t too great, but I got through it. I was called up two more times and had much stronger reads. I was so nervous and pumped with adrenaline that I couldn’t stop shaking. Even if I didn’t get the part, I was still happy to have my first audition.

The cast list came out two days later and I scored a part! My character was mean and flirty. I was the antagonist of the play, or the bully. If you have ever seen Anne of Green Gables or read the book, then you have heard of Josie Pye.

We started practices off with three days a week. We went through lines, blocking and the most important thing everyone had to work on was volume. Volume and using your loud voice are key. Once we started practices on the set everything got more serious and shows we’re getting closer!

On opening night we had a full house. Everyone backstage was nervous and I couldn’t put my script down, but once we all got on stage it was like nobody wanted to get off! It was amazing and so were the next seven shows. Certain nights were better than others and sometimes lines would get mixed up, but all-in-all everything went pretty smoothly.

I am so happy that I got the experience of being in an Anne of Green Gables play! I would like to thank Mrs. Karen Logue for being an amazing director and all the cast and especially Mrs. Lilla Walters for being the perfect Anne! I have made so many memories and learned so many new things and I can’t wait to I get another opportunity to audition again!
