County Plans Save Our Springs and Rivers Academy

What Can We do to Protect Our Waterways?

Would you like to become a Blue Spring advocate and help environmentalists spread the word about solutions to water pollution?

If so, plan on attending the Save Our Springs and Rivers Academy.

The academy will include classroom and field trip experiences, guest speakers and hands-on, feet-wet learning to provide an in-depth citizen engagement experience. Those participating in the six-week course will gain valuable knowledge and pledge to educate others on behalf of Volusia Blue Spring after the course’s completion as ambassadors.

The free adult education class will be held at these times and locations:

  • 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19: Meet at Blue Spring State Park, 2100 W. French Ave., Orange City, for a kayak tour.
  • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26: Participate in a water symposium at the Wayne G. Sanborn Center, 815 S. Alabama Ave., DeLand.
  • 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2: Take part in a mock county council meeting in the Volusia County Council Chambers, 123 W. Indiana Ave., DeLand.
  • 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9: Meet at Lyonia Environmental Center and leave for a tour of the Southwest Regional Water Reclamation Center.
  • 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16: Meet at Lyonia Environmental Center and take a guided hike through the scrub habitat of Lyonia Preserve.

The academy is sponsored by Lyonia Environmental Center, Volusia County’s Environmental Management Division, Project H20 and the Center for Earth Jurisprudence. It is funded in part by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
